Abstract

The Prophetic Hadith constitutes the primary and most authoritative source for the interpretation and explanation of the Holy Qur'an. To facilitate its accurate understanding and interpretation, Muslim scholars developed a wide range of auxiliary sciences. Among these, geography occupies a significant position in elucidating the geographical dimensions of the Hadith. Although geography is an independent discipline, the correct understanding of many Prophetic traditions depends upon the accurate identification of the places, routes, cities, settlements, rivers, and historical events mentioned therein. In some narrations, geographical context is essential for understanding the intended meaning, while in others it provides greater clarity and depth. Moreover, geographical considerations are evident in the Prophet's (ﷺ) teachings concerning legal rulings, acts of worship, military strategy, peace treaties, clothing, food, and other practical aspects of life. Therefore, geographical knowledge is indispensable for the proper interpretation of the Prophetic Hadith. This study proposes the term ʿIlm al-Arḍ al-Ḥadīth (Geography of Hadith) to denote the discipline concerned with the geographical investigation, identification, and interpretation of the places mentioned in the Hadith. It argues that Arḍ al-Ḥadīth is not merely an auxiliary science of Hadith studies but also an essential field for the comprehensive understanding of Sīrah, Islamic jurisprudence, and Islamic history.
