In the contemporary literary landscape, the necessity and significance of literary research and criticism—distinct as they may be in nature—require no introduction. While they appear to be separate disciplines, they are intrinsically and inextricably linked; research constantly requires critical insight and awareness to evaluate the worth of the work being studied, just as criticism relies at every step on the process of research. The aptitude for research provides the keen discernment, mental equilibrium, and logical certainty essential for criticism. Indeed, there is no sphere of modern life untouched by the processes of research and criticism; the act of research begins with human life itself and continues until one's final breath. Recognizing the importance and utility of research and criticism, they are being incorporated as significant topics in education and have been established as formal subjects; consequently, no discipline—whether Urdu or English, economics or psychology, science or any other field—is complete without them. Dr. Ibadat Barelvi is counted among those Urdu critics who can be regarded as foundational figures of literary criticism. While he possessed a multifaceted personality, literary criticism stands out as his most prominent dimension; for him, criticism and research are inextricably linked. This article attempts to shed light on his theories regarding research and criticism—drawing upon his scholarly works in these fields—which hold significance for every reader of literature.
