This paper offers a critical study of the elegiac poetry of Shahid Naqvi, an important voice in contemporary Urdu literature. His poetry is deeply connected with the classical tradition of marsiya, yet it also reflects a modern intellectual and literary sensibility. In his collection Karb-e-Jawidan, Naqvi revisits the tragedy of Karbala not merely as a historical event or a source of mourning, but as a continuing symbol of sacrifice, courage, resistance, and justice. The study examines selected marsiyas, rubaiyat, quatrains, and nohas in order to explore the artistic and intellectual qualities of Naqvi's poetry. His work goes beyond the conventional expression of grief and presents Karbala as a source of spiritual guidance and moral awareness. Through his poetic treatment of religious and historical themes, he connects the message of Karbala with broader questions of human values and social responsibility.Naqvi's poetry brings together emotion, thought, history, and faith in a balanced and meaningful way. His use of traditional poetic forms, combined with contemporary concerns, gives his elegiac poetry a distinct place in modern Urdu literature. This paper therefore highlights his contribution to the continuing development of Urdu marsiya and examines the aesthetic, thematic, and philosophical dimensions that make his work significant.
