Balāghāt in Sīrah Literature

Abstract

Balāghāt are narations that reach us without a stated Isnād (chain of narrators), usually introduced by a phrase such as Balaghanī (it has reached me). In the books of ḥadīth, the muḥaddithīn did not leave such reports unexamined. They traced their sources, assessed their wording (matn), and judged them by the established principles of ḥadīth criticism, so that each could be accepted or set aside on scholarly grounds.

The sīrah literature has been treated differently. The sīrah-writers included many reports of the Prophet's ﷺ life in this same balāghī form, but they did not give them the scrutiny their counterparts in ḥadīth received: the chains were not traced, and the texts were not critically examined. Brief remarks on balāghāt al-sīrah do appear here and there in the sīrah books, yet no work has gathered them into a single, coherent, and systematic study.

The two fields thus share one origin but differ in method. Balāghāt in ḥadīth have been carefully studied, while those in sīrah remain largely untouched. This gap has persisted for centuries, and it is both an invitation and a reproach to researchers, calling on the sīrah-writers to bring to these narrations the same critical care the muḥaddithīn long ago brought to theirs.

The present study takes up that unfinished work,In the Light of Ibn Hishām's Book. It sets out to gather the balāghāt scattered through the principal works of sīrah, to trace them, where tracing is possible, to their earliest sources, and to examine them by the same critical standards the muḥaddithīn applied to the balāghāt of ḥadīth. The aim is neither to reject these reports wholesale nor to accept them uncritically, but to establish a clear and organized method by which their standing may be determined: what can be corroborated through independent chains, what remains unsupported, and what must be weighed on the evidence of its wording alone.
