Abstract

It undertakes a critical and analytical study of the methodology and stylistic character of the commentary (sharaḥ) written on Imām al-Bukhārī's al-Adab al-Mufrad. It argues that, apart from sharah considered, these commentaries are not confined to the mere explication of hadith texts but constitute a body of scholarly and ethical capital in which the commentators have brought together fiqh al-ḥadīth (juristic understanding of hadith), points of rhetorical eloquence, and the practical dimensions of Prophetic morality.

The study further demonstrates that the commentators' methodology extended beyond the conventional criteria of ʿilm al-rijāl (the science of narrator criticism) for verifying chains of transmission and text; rather, they sought to draw out the ethical essence of each narration, its social application, and its inward spiritual dimension, thereby elevating these commentaries from purely pedagogical works to documents of civilizational and reformist significance.

An analysis of style reveals that these commentaries display a distinctive synthesis of rigorous scholarly investigation, fluency and eloquence of expression, and a gentle, formative tone—maintaining academic precision while retaining an appeal capable of moving the reader's heart. It is precisely this quality that has made the commentaries on al-Adab al-Mufrad equally valuable to general readers and specialists alike. The paper concludes that engagement with these commentaries is not merely an academic exercise but a means of illuminating the heart and vision through the moral character of the Prophetic Sīrah, a significance that remains constant across every age. For the modern scholarly world, moreover, these commentaries stand as evidence that within the Islamic intellectual tradition, chain of transmission and ethics, knowledge and practice, and text and spirit have never existed as separate, disconnected domains.
