This research paper aims to explore the multifaceted concept of sin in Islamic theology, focusing on its linguistic, terminological, Quranic, and Hadith-based understandings. The research delves into the etymological roots of sin, examining how it is defined and categorized in classical Arabic lexicons and Islamic texts. Drawing on Quranic terminology such as Zanb, Ma’asiyat, Ism, sayyiah, jurm, haram, and others, the study highlights the nuances of sin as both a moral and legal violation in the Shariah. Furthermore, it investigates the psychological and social foundations of sinful behavior, identifying core causes including weak faith, dominance of satanic influence, indulgence in doubtful matters, the lower self (Nafs-e-Ammarah) immoral companionships, and attachment to wordly desires such as wealth, women, and children. The paper emphasizes that sin is not merely an isolated act but a manifestation of deeper spiritual and moral imbalances, and it outlines the theological consequences of transgressing divine boundaries. Through a comprehensive textual analysis, the study aims to provide a deeper understanding of sin’s ontological, ethical, and societal dimensions in the Islamic worldview.
