Abstract

The teaching of the Qur’an plays a vital role in the moral, spiritual, and educational development of Muslim students. In Rajanpur, a socio-economically marginalized district of Southern Punjab, the process faces serious challenges. This study critically analyzes the current state of Qur’anic education in local institutions, exploring strengths, shortcomings, and prospects for reform. Although the Government of Punjab has made Qur’anic education compulsory, implementation in underdeveloped areas like Rajanpur is hindered by weak infrastructure, socio-economic hardships, and lack of resources. Using a qualitative approach, including field observations, document analysis, and interviews, the research highlights the lived realities of students, teachers, and community members. Key findings reveal that the curriculum is mostly limited to recitation and translation, with little focus on practical application. Teacher competency is another challenge, as many lack training in pedagogy, tajweed, and modern teaching techniques. Resource scarcity, unreliable electricity and internet, and absence of audiovisual tools further weaken the learning process. Student disengagement, monotonous methods, and passive parental involvement also diminish the impact. Financial constraints prevent recruitment of qualified teachers and development of effective programs. Despite these shortcomings, the study identifies strong potential for reform. Improvements can be achieved through curriculum revision to emphasize moral lessons and practical applications, teacher training in Qur’anic pedagogy, integration of affordable digital resources, and active community participation. The research concludes that while Qur’anic teaching in Rajanpur suffers from systemic flaws, targeted reforms can transform it into a meaningful and holistic educational process. With proper policies, training, and community support, Qur’anic education can nurture a generation grounded in ethical, spiritual, and social values.
