This research critically examines the evolution and impact of feminist movements in Pakistan, analyzing how Western feminist ideologies - developed in secular contexts - have interacted with the country's Islamic social framework. The study explores the political, economic, social, and educational effects of these movements on Pakistani women and society at large.
- Politically, feminist activism contributed to women's inclusion in governance and policy-making
- Economically, it encouraged employment and entrepreneurship, yet also created tensions within family dynamics
- Socially, the pursuit of "absolute freedom" contributed to moral challenges and family disintegration, while in education, the introduction of co-education and Westernized curricula reshaped traditional gender norms.
In contrast, Islamic thought presents a balanced and just model of gender relations. The Qur'an affirms: "And for women are rights similar to those of men, according to what is equitable." (Al-Baqarah 2:228) . This verse captures Islam's vision of equity and complementarity, not rivalry. The research highlights the significant efforts of faith-based organizations that promote women's empowerment within Islamic ethics - including Al-Noor Foundation (Dr. Nighat Hashmi), which focuses on spiritual education and moral reform; Minhaj-ul-Quran Women League, established by Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri, which advances social awareness and women's participation ; and Jamaat-e-Islami Women Wing, led by authentic scholars such as Dr. Rukhsana Jabeen, who emphasize education, social welfare, and community leadership grounded in Qur'anic guidance. Ultimately, the study concludes that true empowerment for women in Pakistan lies in reviving the Islamic model of gender justice - one that harmonizes moral integrity, family stability, and social equity - rather than imitating Western feminist paradigms.
